What to visit in York, North Yorkshire?

In this post here, I will talk about what you can see in York, from North Yorkshire, the most iconic town from Yorkshire. And a must visited city.

York, is very old town located in North Yorkshire, around 1 hour drive from Leeds or around 30 minutes by train. I visit this city pretty much eery month, that because I can call myself lucky to live close by. Personally, every time I visit the city, there’s something new in the town, new marketplace, new fun fair, or maybe a new event in town.

Let’s start with what you must visit in this beautiful city. Just note, everything I recommend below, is from my own experience and is basically what I liked personally.

Let’s begin!

1. Clifford’s Tower

I will not gonna go into historical bit, as these can be found easily on Google or Wikipedia, and no point me just copy and paste the information or to use ChatGPT in my post.

The tower is located not far from the river, actually 5 min walk from the river, and if you plan to drive, you can actually park next to the tower which is really handy. Bear in mind, that the parking isn’t cheap. Last time I have been and parked there, I have paid around £8 for 3h. Again, is handy if you want to be close to the city centre, however if you plan to spend whole day in the town, I would highly recommend to use Park and Ride services, which way cheaper than parking for whole day in the town. Let’s get back to Clifford tower :),

If you park next to it, you will see it on the top of the hill, which gives stunning view, and even better view if you will climb on the top by the stairs, the entrance to the actual tower is not free, as I have never been inside, I can’t really say much in terms of price wise. But I quick look on the website, you can find out more about the prices.

If you are photographer, you will have great opportunities to take some nice shots of the tower. Even if you are just a tourist, you can enjoy the viewing of the tower, which is one of the landmark of the York city. And personally I highly recommend visiting the tower.

There below are couple of images with the tower. Hope you will enjoy. More images can be found here: York Prints.

2. York Minster

This is the most visited and icon landmark from York. Every time I go to York, I always go around the minster. Is just huge, and very beautiful building, very old with very unique architecture. So far, I haven’t seen such architecture in other parts of the UK, from cities I have visited before. Depends from which side you will go to see the York Minster, but personally I would recommend to walk via the older street in UK along the Shambles.

If you go that way, means you will see the side of the Minster, but I would recommend to go around the building, especially the front, is just stunning. There is actually a nice little park next the Minster which you will enjoy it if visited.

Once again, York Minster is a must visited if you planning a trip to York. You just can’t miss it, and it’s a great spot for photographers.

3. Shambles Market

Are you into shopping ? If yes, then you will love visiting the Shambles  Market which is basically in the heart of the city. Here you can find some interesting things, from hand made books, to men and woman hats, hand made candles, photo arts and many more. My wife loves to go there and just see what’s new. I personally like the wooden hand made things which can be found in the market. Be prepared to spend a bit if you are planning to buy something.

4. Pubs, restaurants  and eating out.

If you are into eating out, pubs or restaurants then you are the lucky one, in York you can find everything you need or you want, from pubs to take away places. I’m not really into pubs or eating out, so I cannot talk much on this topic. But again, there is huge variety of selection in the city for all pockets, from expensive to cheap once.

5. The National Railway Museum York

I have written an other topic about the museum which is a good location to bring your children along, and it’s free entry. Very nice inside

Worth visiting the National Railway Museum York, UK?

You can view from old trains to newer models of trains, very interesting if you are into this kind of things.
